Restraint & Seclusion

South Carolina Guidelines on the Use of Seclusion and Restraint.

The U. S. Department of Education, Restraint and Seclusion Resource Document outlines the 15 principles for States, LEAs, schools, parents, and other stakeholders to consider when developing or revising policies and procedures for the use of restraint and seclusion.

According to the Center on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) restraint and seclusion are reactionary crisis or emergency responses. School personnel should only use restraint and seclusion in extreme situations like when a student exhibits dangerous behaviors towards self or others, when a risk of serious and imminent physical harm or injury is evident. Never use restraint and seclusion as a planned part of a behavior support plan, as a therapeutic intervention, or as a consequence for behavior. Check out the PBIS web page for more information and support.
